Are You Facing Link Request Rejection?

Rejection can be hard to take, but it’s all a part of the game in link building.  In many ways like show business, taking rejection is just something you have to learn to deal with.

Trying to get links can sometimes be seem as spammy, and link builders can become victims of a frosty dismissal.  At The WebMarketing Group, we know that links are essential to any SEO campaign, so we like to apply the most holistic approach where possible.   Many link building emails lack personalisation but we also know that it’s not always feasible to write out individual greetings to each website owner.  So what can you do?
The first thing is to look at the reasons why your requests may be declined.  Here are a few we can think of:

1. Poor subject line – there’s a big chance your email was never even opened.  Dumped right in the trash box like out-of-date milk, your email probably didn’t even get your recipient’s time of day.   Although it makes sense to put “link exchange request” in your subject line, it’s probably going to give you the black mark straight away.  It’s not always possible to when you have so many emails to send, but if you can, be more specific to the person’s site or the particular content on page.

2. Too pushy, too soon – beggars can’t be choosers.  When trying to catch big links from influential sites for a small business website, a softer approach may be required.  Asking nicely for someone to link to your site and being overly forward with suggestion anchor text are two different things.
3. Not relevant – getting websites to link to you doesn’t have to be difficult.  Whether you are looking for reciprocal links, three way link exchanges, or you have good reason to ask for a one way link, there are many reasons why someone would happily oblige.  But only if it’s relevant.  Finding a website that directly relates to your topic is the best way, but you can also do a little digging to find specific articles or website categories that could relate to you.

4. Your website isn’t up to scratch – if you’ve exhausted all other possibilities, then maybe it’s not your approach, but actually, your website.  If you’ve over commercialised and gone overboard with AdSense, people can see.  Making your website a place where people want to link to is the very first, most essential step, so perhaps it’s time to go back to basics.
