Charlie Sheen Loses his Mind but Gains 2.1 Million Twitter Followers

In the brief space of a week, the crazed and controversial Charlie Sheen manages to gain 2,150,000 followers on Twitter, making it to the Guinness World Records for gaining the most fans in the shortest length of time.

“Stupid, stupid little man” is just one of the many insults which prompted the swift sacking of US actor, Charlie Sheen from American hit TV comedy, Two And A Half Men.  Warner Bros. Television came to the decision of terminating its working contract with America’s highest paid actor after a week-long media frenzy of insults and wild statements initiated by Sheen.

Following requests from Warner Bros. and its broadcast network, CBS, for Sheen to check into a rehabilitation unit for his drug habits, the actor rebelled and embarked on a seven day media attack on his bosses. Charlie Sheen’s outlandish behavior may have cost him his job – estimated at $1.8 million per episode – but his Twitter account showed no signs of stopping after launching.  In just over 24 hours, the Twitter account accrued a million followers and one week later, this escalated to 2.1 million.

We’re big believers in the power of social media here at The WebMarketing Group, and this recent public display by one of the most well known film and TV figures of our time, has proved just how big Twitter and Facebook can be.  And there’s no shying away from the facts – controversy sells.

Sheen’s Twitter updates have been somewhat bizarre to say the least, referring to himself as a “tiger” with “tiger blood” and regularly signing off with the words, “You’ve been warned”.  By using the Twitter hash tag, Sheen has also created an international trend, #tigerblood, which he has also used to draw attention to his latest zany venture.

On March 7 2011, Sheen Tweeted a job advertisement: “I'm looking to hire a #winning INTERN with #TigerBlood. Apply here – http://bit.ly/hykQQF”

Breaking what seems to be yet another record, Internships.com reported that the link posted above received 95,333 clicks within the first hour of being on Twitter.  With visits from 181 countries and more than 74,040 applications, it appears that Charlie Sheen makes a very popular potential employer. But how long will the Charlie Twitter mania last? We live, breathe, eat and sleep social media with our hugely successful Twitter and Facebook packages, so we know that even controversy becomes boring after a while.  Can he really carry on breaking records?  Or will Twitter fans tire of his tantrums?
