Matt Cutts said that the Big Mouth Media site was hand removed from Google for hidden text spamming. He said they had about 13,000 characters in a 60 by 60 box.
As any SEO guru will tell you, hidden text is heavily discouraged and not considered a genuine and ethical SEO practice. Hidden text spamming can lead to disaster - just look at Big Mouth Media.
