SEO Tips for Small Business Websites

Running a small business website requires both technical and marketing knowledge, and according to one of the largest web hosting companies in the world, 1&1 Internet, almost 40% of all web consumers will leave a poorly designed website shortly after landing on the homepage.

Just like a shop floor, you don’t have long to impress your audience. The presentation, the design, the navigation, and the quality of the content can all affect how well your website does with the discerning internet consumer. But that’s not all – a beautiful website deserves exposure.  And this is exactly what we specialise in here at The WebMarketing Group.

Website SEO Tips for Small Businesses

It may seem like an easy formula, starting with good keyword research, changing your title tags and getting people to link to you.  But there’s a lot more to it than that.  How should you apply your chosen key phrase?  Where should you source your links? How else can you maximise your keyword optimisation?

Here are some top tips from WMG:

Write content

Content is king; we say this over and over again, not because we’re preachers, but because it’s true.  There’s no way you can force Google to crawl your site more frequently, but you can encourage it to, and you can do this with content updates.  Content should be uploaded regularly so it’s better to stagger your posts than to upload it all in one day.  Content is the most natural way to use keywords on your site and you can use it in the form of landing page content, news articles, information and guidelines, or with your own blog.

Create a blog

This is one of the best ways to have fresh, exciting content on your site.  Blogs are great traffic drivers and they also benefit web users by providing them with information and news.

Build quality links

It can be very easy to get carried away with buying links here and buying links there.  But it’s important to think before you link (read our guide on choosing quality links).  One bespoke link may be harder to get but the hard work pays off as it could be much more valuable than a few poor quality links combined.

Don’t be tempted to black hat

Black hat SEO methods are seen as unethical in the SEO world and although some people see quick (but short lived) results, it’s very risky as it could result in penalties or a huge drop in rankings when Google catches on to what you’re doing.

Improve on page optimisation

On page optimisation covers everything from your title tags and meta description to your H1 tags and content, your image files and internal links to even your URL slug.  But before you start optimising, thorough keyword research is essential so you can establish the most effective keywords.
