More and more companies and their brands are launching into social media. While some are tentatively dipping their toes into social media, others are fully diving in with all employees engaged in social media.
Lessons from social media faux pas have been learnt hard by some – in the UK the words “
Habitat, Twitter and mistake” go hand in hand.
Whatever your approach we would highly recommend the following:-
- Social media policy – make sure that for whoever you appoint or set free into social media there is a social media policy in place internally within your company. Draft and stick to a formal guideline documents on what is and is not acceptable and wherever possible get any social media engaged employees to underscore that what they publish is their opinion and not necessarily those of the company.
- Train and Learn Social Media – where a selective number employees launch tentatively into social media, ensure that training is made available and that the learnings, mistakes and achievements are disseminated. Social media usage is going to grow within companies – that must be taken as a certainty – so make sure that training is well allocated and information is shared. No point locking away potential within a specialised unit.
- Monitor Social Media – regularly check what action and interaction employees are having with social media. Where success is achieved make sure that this is recognised. Reward and promote social media success as this will encourage others to adhere to best social media practices, social media policy and jump on board training opportunities
