Social Media, PR and SEO: The Melting Pot

Social media optimisation is one of the biggest talking points in the SEO world at the moment – and if we’re completely honest about it – there’s a mix of both good and bad and bad chat circulating the blogosphere.  With so many clashing opinions on the value of social media and how best to apply it, we understand that it can be a very confusing topic.

Here at The WebMarketing Group, we know that the social media world is somewhat unpredictable.  And there’s no magic formula or one-size-fits-all remedy. This is why we always tailor campaigns to each business and we are very flexible with our work.

Leveraging Facebook for PR and SEO

What we do know about social media, is that is works extremely well alongside everything else that we offer.  It helps to promote positive PR and it augments any existing SEO campaigns by building authoritative links and driving high basket value traffic.

Facebook is the most popular social networking site and there are many ways that you can use this platform to boost your online PR.   Although there isn’t a generic plan for everyone, here are a few proven methods that should be considered in your social media strategy.....

1. Create competitions – Facebook competitions have the potential to go viral. If done well, and to the right audience, a Facebook competition can help you promote something even in the most competitive industries.

2. Free giveaways – this is ideal for new product launches.  If you can advertise a free product giveaway, you’ll have plenty of interested people knocking at your door.  Offering freebies will gain interest in your product / brand and it can drive traffic to your website.

3. Embrace the negative – one of the biggest mistakes of a social marketer is papering up the cracks of an unhappy customer or simply ignoring negative feedback.  Social media is a place for people’s honest thoughts and opinions and if you really want to boost your online PR, it’s important to accept the negative criticism and learn from it.

4. Engage people – keep the buzz going with regular activity and always engage with people.  If a customer comments or posts on your wall, make sure you take the time to reply.  And it doesn’t hurt to comment on other people’s posts if it’s relevant – but never spam.

5. Offer exclusivity – is there a reason why people should follow you on Facebook?  What does your page have to offer? If you can offer your Facebook customers exclusive discount codes and giveaways that no-one else can have then there will be a reason for them to stay connected with you.

6. Merge offline with online – Facebook can be used to promote your offline events, or it can be used to create one.  Create real life gatherings with Facebook and give your brand a competitive edge.
