The Pros and Cons of Twitter

If you’re a business, Twitter is a great way to keep in contact with your clients. You can keep them up to date with company news and information, which immediately breaks down the psychological barriers that there sometimes are between businesses and clients. Through writing a short update on Twitter, valued clients can feel much more a part of the marketing mix and they will be able to monitor your success.

However, some businesses might feel that Twitter is a little bit too intrusive. After all, the whole point of Twitter is that you make regular updates and tell your “followers” exactly what’s going on with your business. Another point worth mentioning is that once you start using Twitter, you really are sucked in. Imagine, if you will, joining Twitter and gaining a few followers and then deciding that you don’t have the time or resources to continue to make regular updates on the social networking site. You would have to stop, and then people will think you have something to hide. As a business, you have to be very careful about what you say and what you do. Don’t join Twitter if you genuinely feel that you can’t keep up to it.

If you really have nothing to report on your Twitter page then people will lose interest. Perhaps you’re a small business and you really don’t have that much to say – Twitter probably isn’t suited to you. Don’t thrust yourself into doing something that you really can’t commit to.

Twitter has become popular with celebrities – Stephen Fry propelled his presence on Twitter after he was stuck in a lift for a number of hours and he decided to inform people of this via his Twitter page. For many, it was this that sparked the phenomenal interest in the Twitter site.

If you’re a small business though, it can be hard to justify your presence on Twitter. Many might feel that it isn’t worth spending the time updating a Twitter page and some would rather focus their attention on providing an exceptional service to their clients through selling products, rather than letting people know what the company is doing every 5 minutes on Twitter.

There are many pros and cons of Twitter, and it is definitely something that you will have to update regularly. If you like to keep an element of privacy then Twitter probably isn’t suited to you.
