What’s on Your Social Media Wish List?

Social media is a huge part of what we do these days and it’s become a viable marketing channel for sharing links and content, driving high basket-value traffic, attracting potential customers and creating a firm internet presence.

Social media; it’s great, isn’t it? But what would we ask for if we were greedy little marketers who wanted more?

Measuring Social Media

Although social media isn’t quite as measureable as other areas of advertising and marketing, we can still get a good idea of social media performance with Google Analytics, Bit.ly, Tweet Effect and a whole host of other online tools out there (you can see our list of top Twitter tools here).

But are these tools enough for us? Not for the hungry marketer.  We love social media and we love the opportunities that it’s opened up for the SEO and online marketing world – but we’re still ravenous for more.

There’s still so much to learn and if only someone would invent the ultimate set of social media tracking tools, we’ll be able to get our fix.

What We Want from Social Media

‘We can’t always get what we want’ as the Rolling Stones once told us, but we can try our best by putting our ideas forward and hopefully, someone out there will heat our plea.

At the moment, there are cool little plugins which record our ‘like’ count, both for the domain and individual content pages, but we are unable to see exactly who these people are unless we are friends with them on Facebook.  Being able to tap into this information could dramatically change our demographic research.  So here's what we think.....

Here’s our social media wish list:

• A tool which enables us to see exactly who has liked a URL or a piece of content from our internal pages, not just how many.  At the moment, we are relying on head counts and with some nifty plugins we can see ‘likes’ from our own friends but not people we don’t know.  Being able to analyse the user demographic of people who share our content could prove to be very good research.

• An option to see all comments about your URLs/ content.  A integrated comment facilities allow readers to comment via their Facebook account.  But if there was a way to see all comments on Facebook after independently shared URLs attached to your domain, we could interact with more potential fans and customers.

• A way to operate as a company / website on Google+.   We know that Google+ is still in its early days but there is no current option to sign up as a business or organisation.  It’s a huge opportunity, and word on the street is that they’re currently testing the possible options as you read this post!
