Rumours are bouncing around the internet that Twitter and Microsoft are about to sign a major search deal. Both Google and Microsoft have shown interest in Twitter and a tie up between one of these search engines and Twitter would seem like a very natural progression.
Twitter also experienced some down time yesterday with updates going stale. Bing Tweets, a real-time update of Twitter activity also slowed at the same time. Probably pure coincidence or the fact that Bing Tweets is dependent on Twitter. As with all speculation, conspiracy and hypothesis abounds.
In my own opinion I think all will become clear soon. My theory is that Bing knows it needs something new to compete against Google – Twitter would be a good fit. I also speculate that Twitter may want to side with the underdog – having risen from relative obscurity to global prominence, Twitter may just be more ethically aligned to Bing. That’s pure theory, my theory and business is business so we’ll wait and see.
