Research by IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index show that in July online sales rose by 15.7% compared to June. The total volume of online sales in July stood at a total of £4.2bn.
Year on year figures are more impressing indicating a 16.8% rise as online consumer confidence continues to improve.
The sectors that grew most were electricals and clothing, somewhat attributed to more sophisticated marketing, aggressive discounting techniques and the growing consumer skills at researching and buying online.
Winners
The Clothing, Footwear and Accessories sector grew by 18% from June and 17% year on year. IMRG’s research indicates that conversion rates are increasing up from one in 17 visitors in June to 1 in 15 visitors in July. This conversion rate is one of the highest for all sectors. For all those engaged in online fashion sales, this news will be very encouraging as online is still outperforming high street sales.
Electricals sector also saw continued growth in online sales throughout 2009 and the growth is largely attributed to the longevity online electrical sales have enjoyed. Given their strong history, online electrical sellers can draw on the customer base they have worked to build.
Losers
Online alcohol sales experienced the largest decline with a 23% drop, largely attributed to the bad weather.
Year on Year Winners
Looking at the report in more detail shows that while not all were month on month winners, there are definitely consistent year on year winners. Health and Beauty rose by 21% and Lingerie up by 14%.
