News is rife that Google is in talks with The New York Times and The Washington Post about a possible collaboration or investment. The news comes as Google execs have been talking a lot about 21st century journalism and it seems that they are going to put their money where their mouth is.
The Washington Post reports that Google has been talking to them about improving ways for presenting, and indeed creating, news online. Since new media is where everything is headed, the traditional newspapers need all the help they can get to stay afloat and focusing their publications on the Internet could be the ideal way to survive the recession and increasing newspaper job cuts.
Although described as an “informal meeting”, Google’s involvement with The Post has surfaced as being a discussion about creating new Web pages – just one element of what the search engine giant could help The Post generate. Creating compelling online content is the key to success and it is refreshing to see Google reach out to those who could do with a bit of lift. The traditional media industry continues to struggle as people turn to the Internet to read the latest news, for free. The New York Times and The Washington Post clearly realise that they need to start occupying a large area of the online news market as the shift focuses from paper to online search.
