Google places TV Ad on Super Bowl night

Google is not known for spending on advertising and it comes as a bit of a surprise to see that Google bought and advertising slot on the Super Bowl night. This comes in complete contrast to traditional Super Bowl advertisers who are moving to social media.

“Parisian Love” is a somewhat cheesy storyboard that shows the searches made by someone going to study in France, meeting the love of his life, marrying her and eventually having children. The advert shows that the answer to all questions lies in Google and ends with the tag line “Search On.”

Search analysts are commenting that as a brand, Google, is now coming of age and maturing and that TV advertising is now the expected platform for this kind of brand to maintain media exposure. Google, as always, offer ambiguous explanations as to their motives and on the official Google Blog comment that "if you watched the Super Bowl this evening you'll have seen a video from Google called "Parisian Love". In fact you might have watched it before, because it's been on YouTube for over three months. We didn't set out to do a Super Bowl ad, or even a TV ad for search. Our goal was simply to create a series of short online videos about our products and our users, and how they interact. But we liked this video so much, and it's had such a positive reaction on YouTube, that we decided to share it with a wider audience

From an SEO perspective it reinforces Google’s dominance over other search engines and the several million dollar budget it spent on the slot will not dent Google’s budgets. The advert will drive home to both consumers and businesses that for effective web marketing, solid and growing search position is essential.
