The Guardian reported that parent group Guardian News & Media is to cut about 50 editorial jobs by the end of the year. The move, part of GNM’s plan to reduce editorial costs by £10m, was revealed to staff on the Guardian, Observer and Guardian.co.uk website. They were told that the 850 editorial staff that moved to the new Kings Place headquarters in December will be cut to fewer than 800. The group hopes to make the cuts through “freezing current vacancies, not replacing departing staff and continuing its voluntary redundancy scheme”.
An email to staff read: "These changes aren't just short-term measures to get us through this current financial downturn. They are also about preparing us for journalism in the 21st century, and helping to preserve GNM's journalism in what is a declining newspaper market and a time of great change and challenge for the media industry in general."
