With the swine flu pandemic scare dominating the world’s media, it seems only natural to assume that the Internet has been filled with a swine flu frenzy too. In fact, a recent report suggests that it may spark a change in SEO, since the way people are searching for this flu virus is throwing up some interesting results. People are actually using longer search terms to find swine flu pandemic related stories.

Swine flu, also known as the H1N1 virus, is sending people into a bit of a panic. So, what do they do? They turn to Google and type in long tail search queries that will provide them with more specific answers. For example, if someone is worried about the impact of a swine flu pandemic on asthma sufferers, they might type in “swine flu asthmatics” or suchlike. This will return more relevant results and it is these long tail terms that people are searching for. Think about it – this is an illness that people are worried about, therefore they have specific questions that they want answering – that’s why they type in long search queries.

Search phrases in general are certainly increasing in length, and SEO specialists up and down the UK are seeing the results to back this theory. Here at The Web Marketing Group, we have seen a significant increase in the number of long tail phrases being typed in to the search engines and ultimately generating significant traffic to our clients’ sites. That’s why we developed our LTaS product – a unique long tail keyword tool that is returning some serious results. SEO is well and truly turning to long tail.

So, if a swine flu pandemic seems imminent, the first place it will be spreading is the Internet as webmasters and bloggers try to capture a target market searching for the swine flu virus in Google.
