Emerging research by The British Population Survey indicates that the UK online shopping population has reached an all time high. Statistics show that the three month rolling averages as at December 2009 stood at 48.7% of the population making online purchases.
Over the same period, the percentage of the population making online searches stood at another all time high of 54.5% while the percentage of the population without internet access stood at an all time low of 26.1%.
In terms of what people are buying online, other records were set with both grocery and non-grocery purchases peaking.
The most active demographic is the 35-44 age group with almost 25% of that demographic making online purchases. As the age band progresses the percentage drops progressively until the 65+ demographic which currently stands at about 7%.
All these results are positive. What they indicate most is that online shopping is blossoming, more and more people have access to the internet and as the population ages the reach for of online shopping will grow.
In ten years time, the 35-44 demographic will mature to the 45-54 demographic and, in every likelihood, take with them their shopping experience.
