An anchor link is an important part of optimising your website or blog. It helps direct your visitor to a particular part of the page that is relevant to the current text.
For example, take a look at our SEO page here: SEO
Scroll down and you will see “organic search engine ranking” highlighted in red. By clicking on this, you will be directed to our Glossary page, which defines the important keywords / keyphrases across our site. Note the URL when you click on this – you will see the important # symbol.
So, how do you create an anchor link?
An anchor link is made up of 2 important parts. The first part is the link code and the second is the anchor code.
Link Code: <a href="#myLink">Link</a>
Anchor Code: <a name="myLink">Anchor</a>
Your link code is what you add in the article body (in order to link to another section). The anchor code is what you add in the other section so that it can be linked to.
Firstly, add your link code, ensuring that you add the # symbol. This gives the browser directions for where to go next.
Then, add the anchor link, making sure that you use the same name that you created in the link code. Note that the word “name” is used as opposed to “href”.
For the anchor link to work though, the quotes in the anchor and link tags have to match.
Example:
<a name="fashion">The Hottest Fashion</a>
<a href="#fashion">Fashion</a>
Here’s something important to note if you are adding an anchor link:
If you have a 2 word anchor link that you are creating, be sure to separate the 2 words with an underscore (_). You will see evidence of this when you click on our SEO page and follow the instructions at the top of this article.
