What is page rank?
Page rank software is used to check your Google page rank and should ideally have some monitoring capabilities.
Google page rank also know as PageRank is a Google trademark and is believed to have been names after Larry Page, cofounder of Google. While Google hold the trademark, Stanford University have patented the PageRank process.
Page rank is a value based on 1 to 10 that Google attributes to webpages based on the Google link analysis algorithm. A site with a higher page rank is determined by Google to be more popular. Attaining a high page rank is therefore the goal of all website owners and search engine optimisation (SEO) professionals.
How does page rank work?
The million dollar question that all website owners would like to know and that SEO gurus would like to have.
A very simplified explanation would be that page rank is derived by the number of links from site A to B. Every link from A to B counts as a vote and if A itself has high page rank then that vote will carry greater weight.
Page rank software
The best page rank results will be derived from Google itself as there can be no dispute as to data centres, where the request is being made and other issues. Google toolbar provides a page rank built in within the toolbar software. Every time you load a page a page rank will be shown for that page as in the example below.
Other page rank software
Run a query in any search engine and there will be hundreds of results for sites, software and services that will run a page rank software.
This article does not aim to promote any page rank software over any other. Arguably if we were to be coerced into suggesting any particular software we would suggest sticking purely to the Google Toolbar.
What to look for in page rank software?
Okay, if we were forced into making some suggestions, page rank software should try and look for the following benefits:-
- Make sure that there is the capability to enter several URLs to be run simultaneously
- Look for monitoring capabilities to see any change or progress
- Look for page rank software that allows you to save a list of URLs to regularly track
Don’t get hung up on page rank
Having a great page rank is without a doubt a good goal but don’t get hung up too much on page rank.
