So what makes a good website design? What do people look for?
- Your home page: since this introduces your site to people, it must be attractive to them. More importantly, they should want to enter it. A good idea would be to make the whole page fit into the screen. Smaller graphics and less (but informative) text can do the trick. Don’t try and cram everything in here. And avoid those homepages which contain only the logo and a “click here to enter” link. These only waste time.
- View your pages using various screen resolutions. Different people have different viewing patterns. Some like using higher resolutions while others don’t. Some don’t really care. Also ensure that the screen doesn’t get distorted under even the smallest or largest screen size. A site that may look okay to you may look horrid to another person.
- Aside from viewing on different resolutions, people also browse the Internet using different browsers. Check your codes. Make sure that your site can be viewed on as many types of browsers as possible. Ensure the codes you use are applicable on these browsers.
- Be consistent. This applies to font styles, placements, spacing, colours, and just about anything that appears in your website design. You don’t want your viewers to get confused every time they move to a different page. This is one of the easiest ways to lose them.
- Use graphics and text links. Some people like clicking on a graphic to get more information. Some like using plain old text. Others may even turn off the graphics viewer just to get faster download speeds. So remember: different strokes for different folks. Why not use both?
- Lead them home. This means providing either a graphic (usually the logo) or text link on each page which leads users back to the home page. Just like the various links you place in your pages, this “home link” is very important as it helps navigation around the site.
When planning your website design, it pays to keep your potential site visitors in mind. You may be a small business now, but a good website may be just what you need to play with the big boys.
