Website Design - Hits and Misses

Here are some tips from those who have tried and succeeded at website design:

1. Too many graphics do not make an attractive web page. Too many photos and banners not only slow the loading process, but also make the page look cluttered. Slow loading can easily turn away visitors - especially the impatient ones or those in a hurry. Too many graphics can also make the page look unpleasant. Keep things simple and keep some white spaces throughout your pages.

2. Offer free items, such as software that can be used to view some of your files or for the viewers’ personal use. Make sure though that these are related to your business. Why not offer free gift items to “the 10th visitor of the day”, for example? If you run a magazine, try offering free subscriptions.

3. Some sections that are worth including are:

  • Contact Us: this consists of your company’s mailing address, telephone number, fax, and email address.
  • About Us: company profile and some information about the people behind the company such as management and employees. Why not include photos and a short biography? You can also talk briefly about the products and services your company offers.
  • Links to other related sites.
  • Site Search Tools: this helps visitors find what they are looking for by simply typing the keywords or key phrases.
  • A home page link on each page.

4. When using keywords or key phrases, make sure that they're not used more than three times in each article and never one after the other. And try and input both the singular and plural forms. This enables greater search engine recognition.

5. Use different colours for text, background, and various links. Also make these uniform on every page.

6. Check for spelling or grammatical errors. Have friends or co-workers double check just in case you missed out on something.

7. It would also be a good idea to use keywords or key phrases for the following tags:

a. Page content
b. Title
c. Image and Image alt tags
d. Links

8. Try and keep the website file size to a minimum. This enables it to load faster, even on slower connection speeds.

9. Check for “broken links”, such as those which lead to sites which are “down” or “under construction”.

Using the above tips when you're working on your website design and development might just bring your site more hits than misses.
