Internet Marketing - Get Your Shop in Order

Having your own online shop is a nice idea - lots of customers from around the world, increasing your sales for a lot less hassle. Before you get carried away, though, take some time to ensure that your shop's in order and everything's working exactly as it should be.

If there's one thing we know about Internet shoppers it's that if things aren't smart enough, fast enough, clear enough or responsive enough, they'll leave and buy from someone else. As an online shop, you have far less time to catch and hold your customers than you would in a high street retail outlet and if you miss them, they'll probably never come back. To operate a successful online shop, you must make sure that the technology is in place for customers to make an easy purchase, that everything downloads quickly, payment is visibly secure, emails are sent to acknowledge order and confirm delivery and that after-sales contact details are clearly available and responsive. That's where good Internet marketing strategy comes in.

If your site requires the customer to fill in forms - for insurance quotes for example - you must ensure that you make the process as simple as possible. This could include incorporating drop-down boxes so that clients have a set list of criteria to choose from, or providing help boxes for questions that could cause confusion. Users don't want to feel anxious when they are buying online, and you should do everything possible to make the process as straightforward as possible.

When you first design your online shop, you'll need to test it on your market. If you're already in contact with your customers, then recruit someone to test your site, giving them incentives or discounts for helping you out. Only by extensive testing and re-developement, along with constant monitoring once your site is up and running, can you ensure that your shop is providing the best service to your customers.

Technology moves quickly, and for your online store to be a successful part of your Internet marketing plan, you need to be able to implement any improvements that can provide benefits to your clients. Online shoppers have high expectations and unless you have niche products that they can't get anywhere else, you will need to work hard to keep them returning to your store. You can use tried and tested methods for retaining customers, such as offering discounts and sending e-shots to promote new product ranges, but having an up-to-date, attractive and functioning site will be what keeps your customers coming back.
