If anybody has any doubts that Google has conquered the world they have now surely been laid to rest. A recent poll puts Google as the UK's number one favourite brand. The final nails are being hammered in for the other search engines. It is Google that everybody turns to for help. It's Google we search when we need a plumber or want to find out what year sliced bread was invented (Sliced bread was introduced under the Wonder Bread label in 1930). And Google is where we find solace when we're looking for lost friends or where we vent our spleen when we discover how brilliant an old school associate has become. Google is an entire world where people's hopes, dreams, aspirations, jealousy, dishonesty, business, family lives, social scenes and career aspirations are searched, listed and ranked on a constantly shape shifting map.
Search Engine Optimisation – May the Force Be with You
So if you've got 65% of the internet users searching Google, you want to make sure they find your website, which is why you should never underestimate the importance of search engine optimisation.
Remember the Force
Google has now knocked Microsoft off the top spot in the annual Brandz Top 100 Most Powerful Brands ranking. It is now estimated to have a brand value of $66.4bn.
So if you haven't acknowledged the power of Google yet, you won't know about search engine optimisation and why you need it to keep in Google's good books. Without employing the techniques of search engine optimisation consultants and copy writers, Google could discard your website to the 1,674th position when you want to be in the top ten. It's not easy facing up to the internet giant but with the right stones, like David and Goliath, you can topple the giant.
Google it!
The Google brand beat off competition from mobile phone company Nokia and online retailer Amazon to reach the number one spot as the UK's favourite brand. The Google search engine began life in 1998 and has transformed the world. It's hard to image a day passing by without somebody suggesting to ‘Google it', whatever ‘it' might be. Founded by two PhD students, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the concept came to them while they were working on a research project at Stanford University.
Google Googol
It was originally called ‘BackRub' as the system checked backlinks to estimate a site's importance, but was changed later to Google (a misspelling of "googol".
If you don't know what a googol is and you Google googol, you'll discover it is a large number, the digit 1 followed by one hundred zeros to be exact.)
On Top of the World
Search engine optimisation then has never been so important for businesses and those who need to be in the top ten Google rankings. And the internet giant seems to be growing bigger by the day. Last year it bought the video-sharing website YouTube.
Further evidence of the importance of business and the internet is the fact that online retailer Amazon rose 14 places up the favourite brands list, revealing the growing fervour for buying online, rather than from high street shops. If your website comes up on top in Google thanks to search engine optimisation, you are more likely to see your profits rocket.
