Website Design - Before You Start . . .

A website design must be well-planned. Just as you would plan before rolling out your marketing and advertising campaign, you should do the same for your website.

To achieve a good and effective website design, here are some ideas you should consider:

1. Get your own Domain Name. A Domain Name is your address on the web. More than being an address, though, it is your identity.  It lets people know who you are. If you think that this is a costly investment, think again. There are a lot of companies that provide domain name registration for a minimal fee. And they even offer web-hosting services to give you your place on the Net.

2. Name your domain. Most companies use their company name as their domain name. There’s nothing wrong with that really, as it makes it easier for everyone to remember. However, it would also be a good idea to use a domain name that most people can associate with. A name which uses the product name for instance. This helps as most people looking for a product type its generic name. This in turn increases your chances of being found.

3. Your email address is equally important. This is usually the way people will get in touch with you to enquire or make a purchase. So it would be best to create an email address similar to your domain name. This makes for easy recall.

4. Professional website design and development can bring in more clients. Avoid using cartoon characters unless your business deals in them. Make your customers feel as though they are visiting your “real” store. Try using light colours. Keep it simple yet comprehensive. You may want to use a designer editor (or HTML) program for this; preferably one with template features for a uniform look. Or you can hire a professional website designer if you’re unfamiliar with using such software.

5. Photos tell a lot of stories. It would be a good idea to put some photos in your site to represent what you are trying to say through your text. When choosing photos though, choose the ones which best represent your product or service. Add one that has a human touch, such as proud customers enjoying your products. And place these where most appropriate - don’t overdo it by cluttering your site with too many photos. This can make your site unattractive and will certainly make it slower to download.

6. You should give people all the information they need. Give visitors relevant information about your product or service in short, easy to digest paragraphs. Use bullets when possible, and inform them of other relevant details regarding product purchase such as store address, postage and delivery costs.

Remember that your website is not only selling your products, but your company as well. So plan your website design and development well. It can do wonders for your business.
